St. David’s Church in Wales Primary School in Colwinston is proud to be working towards becoming a School of Sanctuary—an important journey that reflects our commitment to being a safe, welcoming, and inclusive place for all, especially those seeking refuge.
As part of this work, the school celebrated Refugee Week across all year groups. This year’s theme, “Community is a Superpower,” inspired us to host a special community coffee morning. The event was a wonderful opportunity to bring people together, share learning, and showcase the children’s creative work. Visitors were treated to an inspiring display of poetry, art, and reflections created by pupils. We have also partnered with the Arts Council Wales as a Creative School and Year 5 created a wonderful welcome piece for the event. The school choir performed beautifully, and thoughtful conversations took place about the importance of welcoming everyone into our school and local community.
Our Diversity Dynamos pupil group have been at the heart of this project, taking a lead in organising everything. They spoke passionately to guests about their efforts to make St. David’s a place where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. It was a meaningful and memorable event that celebrated the strength of community and the power of kindness.
