Year 2's visit to Rhondda Heritage Park

What was it like to be a child in Victorian times?

Year 2 had a fantastic time visiting Rhondda Heritage Park as part of their exciting topic, Superheroes. This term, the children have been learning about real-life heroes from the past who worked hard to make life better for others. They discovered how Lord Shaftesbury fought for children’s rights, helping to end child labour in the mines and ensuring that every child could have an education instead. During their visit, the children explored the life of a miner and saw firsthand just how dark, dangerous, and difficult working in the coal mines was. They even went underground with their guide and learned about the tools miners used, the sounds they heard, and the challenges they faced every day. The trip really helped the children appreciate how brave and hardworking people were in the past — and how the changes made by people like Lord Shaftesbury were truly heroic.
