Wellbeing Warriors
Wellbeing Warriors Mission team strive to ensure that St David's is a ‘Healthy School’. This is one which takes responsibility for maintaining and promoting the health of all who ‘learn, work, play and live’ within it not only by formally teaching pupils about how to lead healthy lives but by enabling pupils and staff to take control over aspects of the school environment which influence their health.
It actively promotes, protects and embeds the physical, mental and social health and well-being of its community through positive action.
There are three core values: Belonging, efficacy and voice.
What have we been up to in our Mission Team this year?
Autumn 1
For our first half-term, our mission team concentrated on Hygiene. The Wellbeing warriors performed an demonstration investigation in each class in school to see how effective our handwashing was using a special gel and UV torches. It was a surprise how much we missed! We have been more careful since to help stop the spread of germs.
Autumn 2
During this half term, we delved into Personal Relationships and shared important anti-bullying videos and activities with all classes in school. We also created anti-bullying posters which we put up around the school.
Spring 1
During this half-term we have been looking at Substance Use. For this theme we discussed our 'smoke-free' school principles and had a close look at energy and sports drinks. We studied the caffeine content of a variety of popular drinks and told our classes the results, giving them some information about the dangers of consuming too much of these substances.
Spring 2
Our focus this half-term has been Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health. Pupils from Y3–6 completed two wellbeing surveys – SHRN and HAPPEN. These helped us think about what we do well to keep our bodies and minds healthy but also gave us some ideas about how to improve, such as getting a good night's sleep, reducing our screen time and spending time with our families.
Summer 1
This half-term we have considered the importance of Food & Fitness. We have questioned what we have put in our bodies in terms of food and sang songs about getting our '5 a day'. We are in discussions with Mrs Morteo about healthy snacks at break times and this may look a little different next year. We understand the importance of eating enough fruit and vegetables to stay healthy and fight disease.
Summer 2
For the last half-term of the year we investigated the benefits of buying Fairtrade products. We looked at ethical choices and learned that fair trade farms do 4 things:
Do not allow children under the age of 16 to work on their farms.
Do not allow the use of harmful chemicals that could cause injuries, including burns to their workers.
Pay a fair price to the farmers for their work.
Contribute to Fairtrade community projects such as access to clean drinking water, health care and schools.
We will be buying more Fairtrade produce in the future!
